Giampiero Amato was born on May, 16 1958 in Savigliano (Italy). He is Researcher at Istituto Elettrotecnico Nazionale Galileo Ferraris (Turin), now INRIM (Istituto Nazionale per La Ricerca Metrologica) from 1987, achieving the position of Senior Researcher in 1995. He got the Degree in Physics at Facolta' di Scienze M. F. N., Universita' di Torino, in November 1982. Title of the thesis: "InSe Photoelectrochemical Solar Cells." The research work has been essentially aimed to the study end development of innovative materials for applications in semiconductor devices. From an historical point of view: -1982-1986: Study of semiconductor solar cells and power devices; -1987-1991: Characterization of Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon by means of Photoacoustic and Photothermal techniques; -1992-1998: Properties and applications of Porous Silicon -1998-2003 : Nanotechnology and Nanometrology: -2003-today: Transport in nanostructures and Single Electron Devices
His current interests are devoted to QDots, SETs and vacuum systems. He is author or co-author of more than 150 papers on international journals and of more than 60 presentations at international conferences with published proceedings. Luca Boarino was born in Torino, Italy, in 1961. He achieved the Physics Laurea in 1987 at University of Torino with a work of thesys on "Semiconductor power device analysis and simulation with the Finite Difference code "Gemini", in the research group of Prof. C. Manfredotti. After a period of work as a free-lance in the field of computer graphics and multimedia (IBM Italy, Apple Italy) he joined the Istituto Elettrotecnico Nazionale "Galileo Ferraris", Department of Acoustics, with a grant on the development of modulated phothermal reflectance for the study of transport phenomena in semiconductors at IENGF. In 1994 he obtained a permanent position of researcher in the same Department. From 1995 his research activity has been focused on the study, production and characterisation of porous silicon layers for sensors and microsystems application, in the new technological facility of the Quantum Resource Laboratory. From 1997 to 2000 he has been the responsible of projects with Italian firms like Olivetti Balteadisk and ST-Microlectronics, respectively on PS micromachining for bubble ink-jet technology and SOI substrates obtained by PS.
In the basic research activity, from 1999 he started the first studies on interaction between Nitrogen Dioxide and Porous Silicon. From 2001 he coordinated the European Space Agency project "CHECS" (Closed Habitat Environmental Control Sensor) in the framework of the Microgravity Application Promotion program of ESA, co-funded by ASI. In the same year he achieved the position of "Senior Technologist" in the new IEN Department "Nanotechnology and Microsystems". His current interests are related to mesoscopic transport and nanodevices fabrication and characterization. He is author and co-author of more than 80 international publications. From november 2005 he his visiting researcher at University of Maryland, Photonics Laboratory, developing optical waveguide porous silicon biosensors. Fabio Bellotti was born in Turin on 23/05/1979 and got first level degree in Material Science at University of Torino, tutors prof. M. Baricco and Dr. L. Boarino. He joined the former IENGF in the same year, and currently he is Research assistsant at the QR lab, dept. Nanotechnology and Quantum Devices INRIM.
